Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP®) is a non-invasive therapy approved by the FDA for the treatment of angina or anginal equivalent, as well as congestive heart failure. This therapy is currently prescribed for patients suffering from chronic stable angina to alleviate symptoms of shortness of breath, chest pain or fullness, neck, arm jaw or back pain and fatigue upon exertion.
EECP® helps to improve blood flow to the heart in diastole (resting state) by decreasing the workload of the heart, thus lowering the oxygen demand of the heart muscle during treatment.
The EECP® treatments are administered with the patient reclining on a padded table. Compressive air cuffs are wrapped around the calves, thighs and buttocks. Sequential cuff compression moves blood from the lower extremities to the heart thus building collateral vessels. Treatment duration is typically one hour per day, five days per week for seven weeks.
In addition to the treatment itself, EECP® is a daily, comprehensive medical evaluation of the patient. This evaluation includes diet and exercise, smoking cessation, medication review/adjustment and behavior modification. In other words, the entire program is a holistic approach to improving the patient's health status.
This treatment is covered by all insurances.
Our EECP® staff is dedicated to helping our patients with chronic angina enjoy a more productive life.
