Nuclear studies or scans are performed in some of our offices (the Mercy and Butler offices) as well as in a hospital setting. The procedure involves the injection of an isotope which migrates to the heart as the patient exercises. A stress test is usually performed in conjunction with a nuclear scan. When the patient has finished walking on the treadmill, a nuclear camera is then placed over the patient and pictures are taken of the heart after exercise. The whole nuclear study may be referred to as a cardiolyte stresss test, Persantine stress test or an Adenosine stress test. Each test is performed by a cardiac and nuclear technologist. The final study is interpreted by a cardiologist.
